Build it and They Will Come – NOT! The Truth about Successful Internet Marketing

AWhile the “build it and they will come” approach may have worked in Field of Dreams that is not how a website works. The dream of having a website that always ranks in the top five search results, or even within the first two pages, sounds great but there is much more involved than simply building a website. It requires persistence and perseverance so that in time, you will consistently rank high.

Of course, like baseball, a successful, high-ranking website takes doing a variety of actions well, which means it is best accomplished by working with a team of professionals who have your success their goal. So if your website is not ranking as you want, then now is the time to begin making some changes.

The Bases of Internet Marketing

First of all, it is important to understand what the term internet marketing means.  While there are many definitions one might use the simplest is, advertising and marketing efforts that use the social media, SEO, and other tactics to drive direct sales via electronic commerce, in addition to sales leads from websites or emails. It can be done on your own, but it is best to bring in a team whose sole focus is to boost your Web presence.

Here are some of the steps an internet marketing team will take to improve your rank:

First Base:

User friendly – No one wants to spend time on a website that is difficult to navigate, takes too long to load or cannot be viewed on whatever device is at hand. Be sure that your website is easy to find things on, has clear descriptions and Call to Actions, is mobile responsive and that the images used are not too large. Each of these elements can either score or strike out – depending on how they are used. A pro will know how to make the score for you.

Second Base:

Layout and formatting – Make your site easy to read by choosing a font, colors and a writing style that is simple to follow and peruse. Use bold colors sparingly and strategically, keep paragraphs short and be sure to space between them, opt for bullet points or numbers whenever feasible and incorporate sliders, tabs, rollover elements, drop-down menus and accordions as much as possible.

Third Base:

Links – There are three types of links in web design – inbound, outbound, and broken one. For your website to be successful, it needs plenty of the first 2, and ideally – none of the third! Inbound links are used when you connect pages within your site using a hyperlink while outbound links are those that connect to another site –ideally one that is well respected within your industry. The outbound links are noted by search engine, which in turn adds credibility to your website. Broken links are those links that when clicked lead nowhere except to a 404-error page.

Home Plate

Each of the bases is important, but this is not all that can be done. Many other actions can be made to help you score the coveted first page spot. From site maps to Meta data to contact pages with sufficient data, something can always be improved. So, if you want to score a homerun with your website and consistently be in the top of the search results, then implementing these elements, as well as many others, into your skills is a must.
